It was still storming the next morning. The dark clouds covered the sky, and the waves were high. I didn’t know rivers had waves that big, and until that morning, I realized we weren’t even following the natural flow. We were heading west on a north flowing river.

I was up on the main deck. The rain from the storm felt good on my skin. Being up here also gave me some time to think. Last week I was a bartender back in Toulio, and now I was on a pirate ship to help a girl fulfill some old man’s paranoid dream, or I guess the Cryzate faith would call it a prophecy.

Duke came up and stood next to me. “We should be nearing the Singing Islands soon.”

“The Singing Islands?” I inquired.

“Yup. How do you think this river got its name?”

“I don’t know.”

“Well, the islands that sit in the middle of the river are naturally lined with Terium, and when strong enough currents move against them, they create a song.”

“I bet they sound beautiful.”

“Yeah, they do. I would like to set foot on an island one day, but Maggie is worried about the unsapiens.”

“Wait, but those things aren’t real.”

“They are very much real. We’ve encountered them more than a few times.”

“No, they’re not. They are just made up from stories to scare children out of the river.”

“Oh, they are much more than some story. I’ve seen them up close. They do look human until you see their lower half. That’s all fish.” He turned around and relaxed against one of the poles. “They have nothing where their eyes should be, and their teeth are razor sharp. Their skin is green and slimy. Did I mention what they have instead of fingernails?”

I shook my head, and he showed me his hands.

“They don’t have fingernails but sharp bones sticking out of their fingertips. Oh! Oh, and they don’t have lips. I swear I have never seen anything so creepy.”

Chloe was tiptoeing along the rails, coming toward us. The wind wasn’t a bother to her. “Dangerous creatures, they can only be killed with fire.” She jumped off the rail and swatted Duke on the back. “Stop chatting and do your chores.”
